A Return from Seizures: The Story of an Astonishing Musician

Martha Curtis

Martha Curtis has been profiled by CBS’ “Sixty Minutes” and NBC’s “Today Show” in the U.S. as well as in Brazil, Russia, Lebanon, and Prague. Her life experience includes a career as a professional violinist along with a life-long battle with epilepsy. Many years into her career as a violinist she underwent three major brain surgeries to remove sections of her right brain and quell the neurological storms. She studied the neuroscience of her case and will present what she learned as doctors probed her brain for answers. Hers is an inspiring story of victory over biological interruption which she will punctuate with the music that helped her spirit move forward against daunting odds. Because she knows her own medical case well and can perform in both words and music, she brings to the stage unique insight from the inner world of the human being.

“When she began to play it all came together. This is the aesthetic force that drives her will to go beyond survival to thrive and glow in her music.” ---Philip Zimbardo, Professor of Psychology, Stanford University

“The story of Martha Curtis’ indomitable courage and achievement is inspiring and uplifting, a testament to the untapped possibilities of the human mind and will.” ---Charles Castleman, Eastman School of Music
