Ellen Bernstein

Ellen Bernstein is a professional writer and editor based in Chicago. From
1977 to 1999 she was Editor in Chief of Encyclopaedia Britannica's Medical
and Health Annual, for which she commissioned articles to and worked closely
with top medical scientists and health professionals from around the world
(including many Nobel laureates). Since 2000 she has been self-employed,
working on projects ranging from coauthoring a series of articles on the
legacy of the Tuskeegee Syphilis Study on the health of African Americans,
developing a Web site for the nonprofit organization Get America Working!(
www.getamericaworking.org)
to editing a yoga magazine. Her most recent published article, "Health and
Disease," was published in the Britannica Book of the Year for the year
2000. She was an active member of a committee organizing a 2001 benefit
for Access Living, a Chicago group that provides services for people with
disabilities. She is a mentor to two shoolchildren living in an economically
deprived part of the city.
